FAQs – Counterbalance Forklifts
-
What is a counterbalance forklift and when should I choose one?
A counterbalance forklift is a conventional sit-down truck with no front stabilisers. It balances the load with a counterweight and is the best choice for loading/unloading, dock work and versatile pallet handling where floor access on all sides is required.
-
How do I choose the right lift capacity for a counterbalance forklift for my site?
Choose capacity based on your heaviest regular load weight plus the highest required lift height and the load centre (distance from the fork face to the load’s centre). Factor in attachments (which change the load centre) and add safety margins for irregular loads.
-
Counterbalance vs reach truck: which is better for pallet racking and dock loading?
Use counterbalance trucks where you need direct access to loads (docks, truck loading, multi-side access). Use reach trucks when the priority is high racking in narrow aisles and greater lift height.
-
What tyre types should I consider for counterbalance forklifts used outdoors and on rough surfaces?
Pneumatic tyres are preferred for outdoor, uneven or gravel surfaces because they provide cushioning and traction. Cushion tyres suit smooth indoor floors and tighter turning radii. Select tyres with the correct tread and load rating for your ground conditions.
-
What routine maintenance keeps counterbalance forklifts reliable and safe?
Key maintenance includes daily checks on forks and mast, hydraulic fluid levels, battery/electrical system servicing, tyre wear monitoring and brake inspections, scheduled preventive maintenance and operator pre-shift checks.
